Barranquilla, Colombia – The Canadian U17 Junior Women’s National Team will play for bronze at the Pan American Championship after an 8-3 win over Peru on Friday. The win guaranteed a top four finish for Canada and they have earned a berth to the 2020 WBSC U18 Women’s World Cup.

Team Canada started the bottom of the first with a pair of walks before Abbey Tolmie (Clarkston, Mich.) lined a single to center to score Emma Dorval (Surrey, B.C.) from second. After a double play on a lineout to the shortstop, Shelby Miller (Georgetown, Ont.) singled to put two runners on base with Lauren Benson (Surrey, B.C.) lining a double to left to score two more runs, giving Canada an early 3-0 lead. In the top of the second, a downpour hit the field and forced an hour-long rain delay. After play resumed, Olivia Goderis (Swan Lake, Man.) led off the bottom of the second with a single and scored on a double to right by Dorval, who later scored on a single by Tolmie. After Tolmie moved up to second on a wild pitch, Miller singled up the middle to push her in to score and double Canada’s lead to 6-0.

Peru was able to get on the board in the top half of the fourth, getting a runner on base with an error before a triple to left scored her all the way from first. A single scored the runner from third as they cut the lead to 6-2. In the bottom of the frame, Erin Murphy (Surrey, B.C.) led off with a double and after two walks loaded the bases, Ella Herrewig (Surrey, B.C.) singled to drive in two runs. Peru got a two-out triple and scored that runner with a single in the top of the seventh, but that was as close as they would get.

Box Score: Canada 8 vs. Peru 3

Samantha Ryan (Monroe, N.Y.) started the game in the pitcher’s circle for Canada and allowed two unearned run on three hits and three walks while striking out four batters in five innings of work. Katie Korstrom (Abbotsford, B.C.) pitched the last two innings, giving up a run on two hits and also struck out four. Tolmie and Miller paced the Canadian offence with three singles each, with Benson, Dorval and Murphy each contributing with doubles. Herrewig had two singles and Goderis added one.

The win improved Canada’s Super Round record to 3-2, good for third in the standings. Team Canada will take on Puerto Rico (2-3) in the bronze medal game at 3:30pm Colombia time (4:30pm EDT) on Saturday.  The United States (5-0) will play Mexico (4-1) for gold at 6:00pm. Live streaming of both games will be available on the Game Time streaming platform and the WBSC YouTube page.

In addition to the four teams playing for medals, Peru (1-4) was the fifth team from the WBSC Americas region to qualify for the 2020 WBSC U18 Women’s World Cup.
